Groove-billed Ani Baytown Nature Center, Harris Co.

I received a call from Janet and then John Berner (who had found the bird) in the morning, just at a time where I couldn’t leave and make a run for it right away. By early afternoon I had a accomplished what I could for the day and headed straight to the Baytown Nature Center. John had provided great directions and I searched for nearly two hours up and down the road and trails, turning up a single Palm Warbler, but no black bird with an over-sized schnoz. Janet arrived just after five and with the proper technology we had the bird in sight. It perched in the open for a few minutes allowing some distant photos then flew onto the ground to reemerge with a large grasshopper in its bill and disappear for good. A great bird during a great evening, thanks to John and Janet.
