Field Days: The end

The past two weeks have been , no surprise, brutally hot, with temperatures over 100 every day. One more day and the field season is over, probably the last for me for a long time, looking forward to a break. I have learned to appreciate shorebird migration and stock ponds. Out in the coastal plain land birds were pretty quiet and migration has not started yet, but I did record 16 species in basically just two small ponds and an additional 8 species in the greater area. Also the birds were very approachable being confined to miniscule mudflats. Here is a list of what came through: Semipalmated Plover, Wilson’s Plover, Killdeer, American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Greater Yellowleg, Lesser Yellowleg, Solitary Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper, Long-billed Curlew, Western, Semipalmated, and Least Sandpipers, Stilt Sandpiper, Baird’s Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper.

Otherwise plenty of wildlife over the past two weeks, with a Badger out in the open being a real nice sighting, I think my first in Texas. A Bobcat shot across the road and plenty of snakes to keep occupied. Here are some pictures, hope you enjoy. After tomorrow goodbye field life. And almost forgot Yellow-headed Blackbird in town!
